Book review
Chapter review
On todays blog I will be talking about some chapters of a book I read. The book which chapters I decided to read was Coders at Work: Reflections on the Craft of Programming. The reason I chose to read this book was because it seemed interesting and useful the same time. Since information technology is in many ways based on coding, seemed this book like a good one to read.
The book was a collection of interviews with different people who were all related to coding. The first interview I read was with Jamie Zawinski; a Netscape developer and Lisp hacker. In the interview Zawinski talked about his jobs in the coding industry.
Probably the most important thing I learned about the interview was the importance of documenting your code. To be completely honest though, I didn't understand everything Zawinski talked about because there were many technical words related to Lisp which I have never heard of.
The second interview I read was with Brendan Eich. Brendan Eich is the creator of JavaScript. This was the interview I was most interested in because I have used JavaScript for some time now. In the interview Eich talks about things such as the evolution of coding languages and the designing of code. Out of the three interviews from the book I found this to be the most insightful to coding.
What I got out of this interview was that reading other peoples code is very important for learning. I agree with this because doing that will help you learn new ways to write code. Other thing that
Third interview in from the book was with Douglas Crockford, a senior JavaScript architect at yahoo. Crockford talked about things such as his methods of hiring people and the importance of readability in coding.
I found especially the parts about the codes readability useful. Crockford emphasised the importance of finding a balance between readability and efficiency in coding.
